The unimpeded equitable participation in the pursuit of happiness is a quintessential tenet of the “American Dream”. In the absence of egalitarianism, and given limited resources, competition becomes a means of advancement in the game. Unfortunately the competition has not always been fair for all; some have to face various deliberate and unintentional obstacles. Resources are required to get in the game, and these resources must be earned or inherited. To earn resources requires access to opportunities. For most people participation in the workforce is the only way to earn resources.
